La rappresentazione della mitologia in alcune marche editoriali del XVII secolo

Among the iconographic subjects seen into the typographic marks of XVII century there are animals, flowers and trees, scenes from everyday life and work into the farms, allegorical images and mythological characters derived from Greek and Roman tradition . After a brief analysis of the various types of marks the article offers samples from the books published in Italy in the seventeenth century and which have as their object figures and episodes from the myths. For each one the author transcribed texts from the "books of emblems", written since the mid-sixteenth century onwards and that became a useful and scholarly reference to the creators of the typographic brands.

Dediche e pubblico nel Rifacimento di Berni dell'Inamoramento de Orlando

Studying the three dedications of the Rifacimento by Francesco Berni of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Inamoramento de Orlando is very useful in order to proceed to a further analysis of the poem, because they help identify the main innovations Berni imparted to his text. By dedicating the Rifacimento to two important supporters of the processes of renewal within the Catholic Church (Vittoria Colonna and Caterina Cibo), Berni endows the Rifacimento with a moral dimension that the reading of the poem will endorse. In addition, the first verse of the proemio («Leggiadri amanti e donne innamorate») along with the importance granted to women (the three female dedications) provide a direct reference to the Orlando Furioso, one of the models of Berni's poetry.

La dedica ad Ariete: implicazioni anti-aragonesi nel Novellino di Masuccio

Masuccio's Novellino is a collection of 50 novellas first published in 1476. The work presents a very innovative frame: unlike the Decameron, the novellas are not narrated by fictional characters but by the author himself. In addition, he prefaces each tale with a dedication to an illustrious personality. The Novellino's frame of dedications has been little studied, even though the Novellino's dedication letters are fundamental to understand the novellas. The present essay offers an analysis of the dedication to Aries, the seventh of the forth part. This dedication presumably represents a cryptic self-dedication: to Masuccio's own zodiac sign. The recognition of the identity of Aries enables us to grasp the existence of a sophisticated system of implications with the contiguous novellas, the sixth and the seventh of the fourth part. These two tales form a contrastive diptych on the relation between honour and friendship. For Masuccio, honour is the most important value, even more important than perfect friendship. The morals that can be inferred from these novellas and from the dedication to Aries casts a new light on the fourth tale of the fifth part, which contains a covert political accusation against the heir to the throne of Naples, Alfonso II Duke of Calabria, and the Crown of Aragon itself.
