Author’s Notes in Form of a Requiem. A Testimony to Tabucchi and Filippini

The contribution sets out to explore the authorial notes that Tabucchi regularly included in the majority of his novels and tale collections. Even though they seem to be totally separated from the literary text, the Notes are essential in order to explain and clarify the process as well as the development of Tabucchi’s inspiration. What is more, these Notes also reveal many valuable biographical facts related to the publication of his first three books: Piazza d’Italia, Il piccolo naviglio and Il gioco del rovescio. The article suggests that the authorial Notes probably represent a sort of affective homage in form of a requiem dedicated to those who had supported Tabucchi’s initial career. The essay also examines the role played on one hand by Enrico Filippini (taking into account particularly the correspondence of the latter with Tabucchi, which I have recently discovered); and on the other by Vittorio Sereni, i. e. the second dedicatee of this peculiar authorial Notes in memoriam.

Vittoria Colonna ‘dedicata’: sulle dediche delle Rime di Vittoria Colonna tra XVI e XIX secolo

This essay aims to examine the dedications and other relating paratextual forms presented in the several editions of Vittoria Colonna’s Rime between 16th and 19th century, with particular attention to the fact that the author of the dedicated book is herself one of the most celebrated dedicatees of the Cinquecento. The analysis will attempt to show the strategies behind the presentation and promotion of Colonna’s figure and work, which have been carried out by the editors who published her book, many of whom are major personalities of the 16th century italian publishing industry. Furthermore, this diachronic investigation will make it possible to draw interesting conclusions about the reception, importance and prestige of Colonna’s work in different historical and cultural contexts.

Le dediche nelle grammatiche volgari stampate nel Cinquecento. Riflessioni in prospettiva storico-linguistica

This contribution deals with the dedications found in a specific text typology: the grammatical treatises on the (Tuscan-Florentine) volgare printed in the Cinquecento. Our analysis of the dedicatory texts found in roughly thirty works focuses on the one hand on linguistic issues, on the other hand, on historical aspects. In a first step, we describe the ways in which the act of giving (metaphorically speaking: the content of the work) is linguistically codified in the dedications, in both the title and the text itself. In a second step, we analyze in more details those dedicatory epistles which enable us to throw light on the paternity of the works in which they occur. These texts, ultimately, enable us to draw important conclusions on the history of the Italian language.
